DESCENDANTS OF EDMOND EMERSON & MARGARET FRENCH KIDD

The US Census of 1860 lists Edmond’s personal value at $350.00. Real Estate - $2,500.00. He was a farmer and a horse trader in his later years, doing business from his front porch. His second wife, Narcissa, was known as ‘Cissy’. Edmond lived all his life around Blount County, TN. He was the father of twelve children, two died in infancy.
*Note: Most of E.E.& Margaret F.'s children were living in Texas by the late 1800's.

ELBERT SEVIER KIDD , first born son, lived his entire life in Blount County, TN, had twelve children and raised a large successful family, many of whom also raised large successful families. Elbert's father, Edmond, was said to raise and trade Tennessee walker horses and when Elbert ('Eb' as he was called) was about 10 years old he had a horse of his own, as a pet, his father had given him. Family lore tells us that 10 year old 'Eb' was absolutely heartbroken when his prize horse was confiscated by a group of soldiers in 1861, presumably to support the civil war effort. It's not known if the horse was taken by Union or Confederate soldiers, but it is known that shortly thereafter Tennessee joined the Confederacy and the governor sent rebel troops to occupy eastern Tennessee to insure its loyalty. But in spite of that, as eastern Tennessee leaned Union at the time including Blount County, many young men from that area joined the Union army. *See - Kidds in the Civil War
But none of that mattered to poor Eb. All he knew was his beloved horse was gone. Nevertheless, young Eb grew into an upstanding citizen and loyal family man, and family lore tells us that he was never heard by anyone to utter a curse or foul word at man or beast, even when plowing!
JAMES RANDOLPH KIDD, Sr., second child of Edmond Emerson, moved to Texas in 1886. The U.S. Census of 1880 lists James R. and wife Rachel, living with her mother Elizabeth (Betsy) Taylor. It is presumed that her husband Wiley (Taylor) was dead at this time. When Betsy married Wiley, he was a widower with a daughter, Frances, and two sons who were killed in the Civil War. Rachel was often heard to say she "was born in Eighteen Hundred and Sixty One, the year the cruel war begun."
By 1886 J.R. had brought his family to Elam Thicket in Dallas county, (called Elam Springs now) in Texas in a wagon pulled by a team of horses. They bought forty acres there and cleared the land to plant crops. A small house was built with a picket fence around it to keep the animals out. Before they could dig a well they got water from 'mudholes' that probably were local naturally occurring ponds.
By 1900, J.R., Sr. and family had apparently moved for a time to Kaufman TX, precinct #8, as the 1900 Census reports them as living there. Shortly thereafter the J.R. Kidd, Sr family moved south of Ft Worth between Everman and Burleson and purchased farm land there. It was there each of the sons were given a small black-land farm by James R. and Rachel when they reached adulthood.
MICHAEL A. (Mike) KIDD , fourth child of Edmond Emerson, rode to Texas on horseback with his older brother James R.,Sr. seeking a better way of making a living. The rich black land of Ellis County looked so promising that they decided to move to Texas and make it their home. Michael married Zyrilda (Rildy) Davis, sister of his brother Riley’s wife, Theodocia. The census lists Zyrilda born in Alabama. The 1900 census lists them living in Ellis County (Waxahachie, county seat), Texas. They were the parents of eight children. Three died in infancy. Michael was a farmer. After his death, Rildy lived a time with James R. Sr.’s wife Rachel, in Fort Worth.
RILEY JACOB KIDD, fifth child of Edmond Emerson, attended college in Maryville, Tennessee until the age of 20 years at which time he left Tennessee and also came to Texas. He did not return to Tennessee or talk about his Blount county relatives. Upon his death his Grandson Laroy, contacted Nannie Lou Simmerly in Maryville, TN and found out about his Grandfather’s family. Riley helped to raise Laroy after the infant’s mother died in the influenza outbreak of 1918. Riley lived in Richardson, Texas.
MARSHALL BURNSIDE KIDD, sixth child of Edmond Emerson, left Tennessee and settled near Richardson, Texas. After his death his widow (Jospehine 'Josie' Wilkinson Kidd) took the four sons and moved to California. One son, Clarence, became a Methodist minister and attended seminary at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas.
EMERSON N. (U.?) KIDD, seventh child of Edmond Emerson, lived in Kaufman, Texas in 1900. In 1908 he was reported leaving New Mexico after homesteading land there which he had bought for $1.25 an acre. He wrote that the land was too dry and he was going to Altus, Oklahoma to farm.
GEORGE FRENCH KIDD, eighth child of Edmond Emerson, was also persuaded to move to Texas, but only stayed two years as his wife, Annie Love, was so unhappy. Also by then, the cotton boom in Texas had gone bust. He moved back to Tennessee in the fall of 1909 where took care of his aging father and inherited the Kidd family farm.
