Sent to Cahaba Prison, a prisoner of war camp in Dallas County, Alabama. Was paroled on 4/21/1865. Lewis survived the disastrous Sultana (steamer) explosion in which his brother James William KIDD was killed. Discharged from the Union Army on 6/10/1865, Nashville, TN. Source: Military record. 9. James William KIDD DOB: ca 1839 per 1850 Blount Co., TN Census. Listed in the household with Thomas Jefferson KIDD in the 1860 Blount Co. TN Census.
CIVIL WAR SOLDIER: Private, Company A 3rd Regiment TN Cavalry (Union Army) Army). Aged: 29 years, 5 ft. 8 in. tall, dark complected, blue eyes, dark hair, was a farmer. Enrolled 11/10/1862, Knoxville, TN for 3 years. Mustered in 1/27/1863, Murphreeboro, TN. Captured by Confederate troops at the battle of Sulphur Branch Trestle in Alabama, 9/24/1864. Sent to Cahaba Prison, a prisoner of war camp in Dallas County, Alabama. Was paroled on 4/21/1865. James was killed in the disastrous boiler explosion of the steamer "Sultana" while being transported on the Mississippi River
about 9 miles above Memphis, TN, 4/27/1865, at about 2 o'clock in the afternoon. James’s brothers, Lewis Milton KIDD and Alexander KIDD, were also on the Sultana, but managed to survive. Their brother, William Riley KIDD had previously died of disease in Cahaba Prison. Pension: James's Mother, Mary M. KIDD drew a pension on his Civil War Service.
